Lesser Black-backed Gull in Prospect Park 1/2/09
In this picture from the west shore of Prospect Lake the bird is near the back edge of the main mass of gulls, almost in the center, a bit to the right of two Great Black-backed Gulls.
Here’s a close-up of the same view. The Lesser Black-backed Gull has it’s head tucked, but you can see that it’s bigger than the Ring-billed Gulls but not quite as large as the Herring Gulls and not quite as dark as the Great Black-backeds.
A clearer view was gained from the south shore of the Lake where I observed the bird for a few minutes before it flew off just before noon, about an hour after I’d first noticed it.
