The Cottonwood buds have opened since last we viewed them, revealing fuzzy red catkins.
There aren't a great many Cottonwoods in the Park, and last year, I missed their flowers altogether. Not this time! You've got to catch them early. These poplars are dioecious: male and female flowers on separate trees. Based on the literature, I think these are male flowers, but I'm not quite sure yet. We'll just have to keep watching.
