Green proliferates and predominates as leaf-out proceeds. The Elm recedes behind a screen of fresh foliage, its woody arabesques hidden until the Year turns once more to decline, which seems a state beyond consideration at this moment. Even so, there is a touch of red in the new leaves of the Northern Red Oak (below, at right), a sort of mirror of its autumnal blush. Just as the chlorophyll fails in the Fall, revealing the “true” colors of the leaves, it has yet to overpower the underlying pigments of the new-sprung foliage.





I said that April would contain more change than other months, and as its sun sets, I think you will agree. But then again...
