For the record, that closing statement of Saltz's is disingenuous. "By now, almost everyone would agree that the work of Agnes Martin or Donald Judd is no more 'inside' than Wölfli's or Darger's. In fact, painting grids or making boxes for a lifetime is as out-there as drawing the cosmos." Saltz knows Judd and Martin saw their work as participating in an art world discourse (unlike Wölfli), and channeled their obsessions through that (Martin still does). This kind of "it's all art, man" argument isn't helpful from a critic. I know you know this, Bill, I just have to say it.

thanks for pointing this out, bill. i'm going on saturday and i didn't know most of his story, especially the molesting bit. have you seen the show?
