I think the issue with Picabia wasn't that he was considered dilettantish (because of the multiple styles) but that he was considered bad (because of the erotic nudes, etc). He wasn't revived until the Salle/Schnabel generation insisted on a fresh look at this "artist gone bad."
It's tough out there for artists, which this writer sort of seems to recognize.
