i heard them today on npr. they couldnt quite nail down the attribution. flw, schindler? im having a little trouble putting together why architecture is any more like frozen music than anything else. any ideas ? host john schaffer quipped : that in turn, music should therefore be like melted architecture.

If metaphors were things the homeless would all be housed. I’m reminded of Smithson’s Heap of Language. And a heap of something else.

  • I’m stubborn. And went last night to hear them.
“Half-baked academic blather” seems to be an understatement - I should have listened to you Alex - it was an incredibly frustrating experience. DJ Spooky was all over the place. I really could rant but I will try to hold back. I will just say that “subliminal kid” needs to unpack some of his rhetoric and make some sense of what he is quoting. He also needs to learn respect for the people he refers to so lightly. Everything he said was out of context in a seeming attempt to prove his point. The real tragedy is I don’t think he knew what point he was trying to make.
Today I am hearing words like “pompous” and “insulting.”
I agree Bill I don’t think ‘architecture is any more like frozen music than anything else.’ Anything with pattern, base, form, foundation?
But the soap opera will continue next:
“WHAT: Philip Glass, whose music has defined American minimalism, and
architect Thom Mayne, principal of Morphosis and designer of The Cooper
Union expansion project, explore the concept of "the music of the
    spheres."

    • How did Christopher Janney come across on npr? Last night he seemed to at least be grounded. But maybe that was just in comparison to Lynn and Spooky?

    • i could only keep half an ear on the radio. not john schaeffer it was "soundcheck".

"It's often said that during the 1990's, the lines between art and architecture became irrevocably blurred. Yet the cross-pollination between architecture and music is an even older and arguably richer tale. Today we're joined by musician DJ Spooky and architect Greg Lynn, who together are part of a series of forums at the Cooper Union this spring. Also, we’re joined by Justin Davidson, who is both the Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic and the architecture critic of Newsday. He sheds some light on the differing notions of preservation in architecture and classical music, and looks at music written for specific buildings by everyone from Monteverdi to Wagner and Boulez."
