NBC/National Geographic Travel fire Peter Arnett for remarks made in an interview by Baghdad TV. And haven't had time to read Sy Hersh, American journalist. Can't give him enough links. Meanwhile there's a big shootup between US Marines and paramilitaries near Najaf. Light trucks charging tanks -- hmm, sounds like Poland in the fall of 1939.

Too busy to take up jim's inviation for now, but should also keep a list of words being purged or edged out of the lexicon: fedayeen (now terror squad is preferred, paramilitary or militia acceptable); cakewalk is so two weeks ago; operational pauses don't exist; etc, etc.

I only watch the dreaded Fox News when I'm picking up laundry or pizza in my neighborhood. But I managed to catch one of their reporters giving a recap. When she got to the word fedayeen in her script she paused, gave the camera a penetrating look, and translated for viewers: "Saddam's thugs." She reports, we decide.

But that was a few days ago. I guess she'd say death squads now.

according to a friend of mine, who was appropriately nonplussed, fox has also repurposed the term "homicide bombers" for all of those unauthorized combatants. case in point.

of course i meant "unlawful combatants." and you know what we do with those unpeople, ship them off to guantanamo. and just in case you forgot who profits from camp x-ray, heres a reminder.

another good list would be bits of history that are dredged up by the war to become common currency.
some that spring to mind are

1) comparisions between the impending siege of baghdad and the siege of stalingrad

2) the story of sen "scoop" jackson and the bifurcation of the neocons from the democratic party

3) resurrecting napalm enthusiast general curtis lemay as military ethicist.

"Actually I think it's more immoral to use less force than necessary, than it is to use more. If you use less force, you kill off more of humanity in the long run because you are merely protracting the struggle."

add Clausewitz to my list, at least in the print media, or "fog of war" if youre a tv analyst.
