Fritz Hollings has introduced the newly renamed SSSCA to Congress. This is the big one. They are actually going to try to outlaw general purpose computers.
Once known as the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act, the newly named CBDTPA says that all "digital media devices" sold in the United States or shipped across state lines must include copy-protection mechanisms to be defined by the Federal Communications Commission.
Decan McCullagh has lots of documents at Politech. Here's the slashdot thread.

I know from trying to explain this to people - even to smart people in the industry! - that most do not understand the gravity of the situation. This is a serious threat to the future of freedom in general.

Should we be stocking our fallout shelters with a twenty year supply of general-purpose computers?
- alex 3-22-2002 2:57 pm

Probably you're joking, but if it starts to look like it might pass, then yes. Seriously.
- jim 3-22-2002 3:11 pm

Does this mean Mickey Death is about to win? In the future we know NOTHING! When they take away all our facts only the genius of the East Midland dialect will remain to save us. Teach your children well... load them with the ultimate bullshit detecting software ever made: a thorough knowledge of their language. The coffee's kicking in & poor Frank is realizing it's Heart Of Darkness
thru & thru. & what if I'm wrong. Thanks Jim & Dave. Anyone who can think for themselves knows how evil this is. How many of us are there? Will we hide in caves quoting Keats until the dark ages pass! Mr Kurtz...cloned, alive & well, goes to Washington.

Hollow laws for hollow men, but nature abhors a vacuum; send 'em up the river.
- alex 3-22-2002 3:25 pm

"Mr Kurtz...cloned, alive & well, goes to Washington."

that would make a nice movie except that hes already there and hes a pundit.
- dave 3-22-2002 3:28 pm

I'll take Brando any day. And I mean as a pundit.

From wired:

Now spokesman David Carle says that Leahy is just as critical of Hollings' CBDTPA, and has the same plans to prevent it from being enacted this year. Since Leahy's committee has jurisdiction over the bill, he may be in a position to do it.

- jim 3-30-2002 11:17 pm

"...genius of the East Midland dialect.." are you talking about Tom Moody.
- jimlouis 4-01-2002 7:28 pm

Is that a New Jersey joke? Someday everyone will be from New Jersey. I cut my teeth grades 4-12 in Summit N.J. This ain't no Creole we be talkin' cher. Only the pure cargo argot spoken here.
- frank 4-01-2002 8:20 pm

Northeast Midland, to be perfectly accurate. I once got slammed up against a locker for deriding the "South Side boys"--although in all fairness to myself, I just said that the guys who held a kid down and cut his hair were "scum," I didn't say what part of town they came from. That was inferred by the kid who ratted me out to the ultraviolent Thomas Welch.
- tom moody 4-01-2002 8:20 pm

No, not a Jersey joke, and I hope I'm not telling TMoody secrets here but the reference was a loose one meant to bring out the fact that Tom and our esteemed World Leader And Chief, GWjr, both spent their formative years in Midland, Texas. I have even heard rumors, and listen up, these rumors are unsubstantiated, but the word on the street is that Tom and George were...well Tom should be just about waking up, he can tell you...if he wants to.
- jimlouis 4-01-2002 8:30 pm

Sorry, maybe you didn't know, I grew up in Midland, Texas, home of the President. I only wish it was a joke. Re: the Tom/George connection, I'm pleased to say he left Midland around '60, which was when I arrived, and returned there in '75, which was four years after I'd left. We did both attend San Jacinto Junior High, but many years apart.
- tom moody 4-01-2002 8:31 pm

How English got this way. What language Bush is speaking, I don't know (please insert joke of your choice).
- alex 4-01-2002 9:54 pm

Oh, that East Midland
