I'll be saying more about [upload] over the next few days, but for now you might want to know there is a new verb, "getthumb" that operates exactly like "getpic" but displays a tumbnail instead of the picture itself. Picture x (/getpic/x) now automatically has a thumbnail with the same id (/getthumb/x).
- jim 11-16-2002 10:19 pm

The thumbnails look great. Very useful size; everything's recognizable. One thing I noticed on the [upload] page: the old "complete list" contained beaucoups of pics I uploaded before there were categories to put them in. Maybe a way to access those jpegs is a category called "Uncategorized"?. Also, the "delete" feature was useful for those of us who feel guilty about being upload addicts. Even though I think you said the jpegs aren't actually deleted, only the identifiers??? Please let me know if the page is under construction and these comments are premature. Also, for some reason, this charming picture I uploaded tonight doesn't "thumbnailize."
- tom moody 11-17-2002 5:42 am

It's not done, of course, but that means I am looking for your input. The complete list is still there. I'm just not sure how to present it. I'll put it back tomorrow in some form.

The picture you uploaded should have been thumbnailed. This is a bug. I'll find it tomorrow. Thanks.
- jim 11-17-2002 6:02 am

This should be fixed now. Thanks Tom. Picture editing (moving to different albums) and deletion coming up.
- jim 11-17-2002 7:10 pm

I'm finding lots of bugs in the new upload / thumbnail / album scripts. Some at the conceptual level. Shouldn't be too hard to deal with though. That's at the top of my list. Maybe today, if not by the end of tomorrow..
- jim 11-17-2002 7:54 pm

I'm still having a problem getting pic 1890 to thumbnailize (horrible verb, I know). Here's what the whole page looks like. That grotesque racial caricature is the Alabama police composite of the sniper, BTW. Some states never change.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 6:03 am

OK. I think the [upload] problems are all sorted. Let me know.

Still have to enable editing and deleting.
- jim 11-18-2002 5:56 pm

Thanks, looks good. My "complete list" will be a real browserful in the thumbnail mode, so having the edit function will be really useful. If I can create categories for the old pics in the "complete list" (assuming that's what you're planning), all the albums can be a manageable size.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 8:06 pm

I've noticed that when I edit a post and click "update" I don't go back to the post but rather a blank version of your weblog page (or whatever the main page is). This started happening after I got Windows XP, I almost hesitate to mention.

Okay, I'm editing this as a test in Netscape 6.2
- tom moody 11-18-2002 8:11 pm

Yes, you'll be able to add old pictures to new albums through the picture edit screen. Not done yet though. I was thinking of not having the thumbnail view available for the complete list.

I'm not seeing the wierd edit redirect. Anyone else? I don't see how it could be XP though. Maybe a browser issue. Do you have a different browser you could check it in?
- jim 11-18-2002 8:16 pm

I should have mentioned I have XP, Which As We All Know Cannot Be Separated From Internet Explorer.

I edited my previous comment on Netscape 6.2 (which I guess Microsoft loads with XP out of pity), and the same thing happened. I ended up on your page, which has all the same left hand column links and banner but no posts in the right column.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 8:32 pm

Not having thumbs for the complete list sounds good, BTW.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 8:43 pm

In Explorer I have a similar problem. When I update it does not direct me to the page which I've updated, it stays on the page with the text window. I have ot hit the home button then go to the page I was updating in order to see the updated comment or post. (this was true before the site update) I don't have that problem in Mozilla.
- steve 11-18-2002 9:22 pm

I'll try to duplicate this in ie on os x. That'll be half the battle. Thanks for the info Steve.
- jim 11-18-2002 9:28 pm

I just tried to add a comment to the above but was directed to a page which stated "there are no comments here" By clicking "add a comment" on your comment I was able to make the "add a comment" under my comment (which appears under your comment) work.
Errr......I'm trying to say that I can only edit my comment through a parent comment. This problem is new with the site update.
- steve 11-18-2002 9:35 pm

New uploads are still not thumbnailizing. Here's that page again: note that pic 1894 (the last one) isn't rendering.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 10:09 pm

That might have been a fluke. It did make a thumbnail, but the thumbnail is corrupted in some unknown manner so it won't display. I downloaded it and then reuploaded it, and it was thumbnailized correctly.

I did uncover a new bug though. I made a new album called 'test', not knowing that you had made an album called this already. It added my upload to your album. Weird. I know I wrote something to check for this and not allow it, but I guess the saftey isn't working. I'll look into this now.
- jim 11-18-2002 10:16 pm

Hmm.. That's weird; I haven't created any test files. Also, the thumbnailized image is now in the "technodiary" album but when I created it I selected "Weblog" as the album. On the "Weblog album" page (see link in my comment above) it's still not rendering as a thumb.

Oh yeah--when I first did the upload, the page telling me the upload was successful had a bunch of warning script on it.
- tom moody 11-18-2002 10:43 pm

Making progress. Your pictures weren't thumbnailizing because of a wierd technical issue I was lucky to discover without banging my head against it for weeks (progressive jpegs have a mime type 'image/pjpeg', and I was only looking for 'image/jpg' or 'image/jpeg'.) I believe I have all the possible mime types accounted for (well, it won't do .png's, which it probably should, but I doubt that will be a problem right away.) So they should thumbnailize now.

Also, the duplicate album name problem is now checked for (it was checking, but only for duplicate album names by the same person - now all album names have to be unique.)

I'm not sure about the album problem you had. I'm just going to go ahead with the editing and complete list tools, and maybe they will give us better powers of diagnosis.

The link toTom Moody FAQ appears on my homepage but I don't see that page listed on the subscription page so I can't figure out how to turn it off. (No offense to you Tom, I've got links to your other pages, I just don't need a link to the FAQ) When I go to Tom Moody FAQ there is not a subscription link at the bottom, so I can't access the on/off option that way either.

- steve 11-19-2002 4:55 am

...funny, that link appeared on my home page months ago, via some bug as I recall, but I never dealt with it until tonight, when I ran into the problem you describe. You can write /subscription at the end of the url in the location field.
- alex 11-19-2002 6:15 am

Of course! Thanks for the tip Alex, that solved it.
- steve 11-19-2002 9:46 am

Yes indeed. IE seems to not send the proper HTTP_REFERER variable. I believe I have the work around in place. Is it better now?
- jim 11-20-2002 6:01 pm

Not as of about 6 min. ago when I edited the mars post on treehouse. (I know it's my goof, but how come my name and posting date are part of the link?)
- steve 11-20-2002 6:08 pm

You were missing the closing </a> tag. I added it.

Can you confirm that it is still not working? You might have just beat my fix on that last edit you tried.
- jim 11-20-2002 6:10 pm

Spoke too soon, looks like you just fixed it.
- steve 11-20-2002 6:10 pm

Jim, I can't add comments to the later comments to this thread, only the parent comments. Yes, your fix for the edit post problem in IE did work, I must have just beat the fix when I tried to edit the Martian pic post in treehouse.
- steve 11-20-2002 6:17 pm

Wow. That was a strange one. Think I got it. Thanks for catching that! It's amazing what huge holes there can be that I don't see. It's so hard to test every possibility.
- jim 11-20-2002 6:50 pm

Works now, cool
