A Canadian group who call themselves the Raelians (who believe, among other things, that humans life began 25,000 years ago when some aliens visited this planet and cloned themselves,) are saying that they have produced the first human clone.
I've never heard the media raise the question of cloning's potential complications to the human gene pool. Imagine "The War On Clones" where future governments round up suspected clones and their sympathisers, forced sterilization etc.. This could make Nazi Germany look like a picnic. Roe vs Wade 100X. Welcome to the world of PK Dick. Have I mentioned this before?
Flow thy tears, the policeman said.
I'm sure you're right Steve, but what exactly are the complications? Do you mean if it doesn't work out like they plan?
As far as I know (which isn't very far) they are still a long way away from really being able to clone humans. Perhaps the Raelians are telling the truth, but if so you'd expect the clone to at least have the Dolly problems associated with premature aging. The explanation, at this point, is that the "junk" portion of your DNA changes in length over the course of time, and this is part of your biological clock. Since Dolly (or any new born clone) has an exact copy of an older organism's DNA, she starts life with her clock set to the age of the source ogranism.
So it might be the case that solving the problems of cloning results in radical life extension. At that point clones might not even be very interesting any more. So perhaps it's just a stepping stone.
If we're talking about producing clones in order to harvest compatible organs, then I suspect that will go on in other animals like pigs (sorry linda.)
Anyway, interesting stuff. I'd bet the Raelians have done something, but not anywhere near a "real" clone.
What if it turns out that clones are somehow physically inferior to non-clones, could "cross breeding" be damaging to the human gene pool? And what if it takes a generarion or so before this discovery is made? How would the various governments of this world respond once the genie is out of the bottle?

if i had a clone of myself...
oh wait, that's not a very clean thought. ^_^
i am into cloning only if they can do it so that an exact replica of me can be made fast, i could sell so much more wine and "I" stay at home:>):>)
Wait, you're saying there aren't multiple Wheels?
One is enough it seems:>):>) Happy New Tree Year, me amigo!!
When Jesus Christ are God, lord, and savoir comes back will you be ready. The truth comes from the bible but not from a raelian perspective go to a christian church you will find the truth of the bible there.

mmm. makes you feel all warm and fuzzy, dont it? but wasnt christ a clone, or am i missing something?
if there is only one god and one lord, how can jesus christ also be called those things? does jesus = god? is that why he's a clone? will we be ready for what?! i'm so confussed now arurururu?
The Dogon believe also thet we came from outer space, and they showed sciene that its there, thats where we are from "the Dog star", well it took science a while to get a telescope strong enough to see it.....Dogon spelled backwards is NoGod....
Dogon and Sirius.
How do you know if there won't be any complications with cloning a human. How do you know if there will be a soul (or conscience if you like that word better)... Like it isn't like a sperm and egg united... there will be no way we will be able to really ever determine... Like they may communicate like us, but will they be empty inside? You really can't compare human cloning with identical twins because the identical twins came from one egg and one sperm and then separated. A natural process. Human cloning is from a cell of an individual and the egg. What if the sperm plays a major roll and with out it there is something missing even though it goes undetected because the clones act like natural born humans? Is it really fair to human clones?
This inability to prove anything about the internal state of another person is a general problem not limited to others who are cloned. Or, in other words, we don't know for sure that any other person has a soul or a conscience, so why should clones be any different?
Still, I'm not particularly in favor of cloning. I think there are more interesting problems. But it's going to happen.

Claiming to have founded "the world’s only atheistic religion," he pokes fun at the Pope, and deplores sexism and racism. His followers—50,000 strong and growing, in 84 countries around the world—share many of the assumptions and opinions of secular humanists, feminists, gay activists, and swinging singles. They virtually bristle with tolerance when they approach the media. 'Respectez les differences!' is a major Raelian tenet."
What Rael says is not true. Elohim does mean Gods. But the Hebrew people were desribing a big God because when they describe something big they make what they're desribing plural. So if they were talking about a big cat they would say cats. And there is a plural for magesty. The truth comes from the bible and christian churches. When I say the truth comes from the bible I also mean from a christian perspective. Rael takes the book of Genesis and completely currupts what God is doing. Alians have nothing to do with the bible or the book of Genesis. If you go to a christian study group you'll get a whole new respective of the bible.
I'll pray for you and Rael
