I cooked dinner again last night. That's four times this past week, which is quite a change. Very satisfying. And it's hard to beat the price. I'm going to try to keep this up. It feels healthy. Mentally. I'll probably start wishing for a garden soon. Somebody stop me....
lowes has used oak whiskey barrels for roof top gardens. they have the original distillers brands and still smell uuum uuum good.
go brother!!!! whats on the menu's?? what's HOT!!
Last night, to start, I took the leftover kippered salmon risotto and squeezed it into numerous small balls. Then I took a little spoon, made a tiny hole in each ball, stuffed in a center of wasabi flying fish roe, and deep fried them. I coated them in the super rough japanese bread crumbs first. Yum. Dinner was just basic pasta. Turned out nice though. Joe gave me a magnum of Solen 2000. We started with a bottle of the 2001 Manincor Moscato Giallo (thanks!)
Previously I was working a stew/soup/chowder over several days that I was very happy with. Potato, parsnip, fennel, carrot, smoked trout, tarragon. It kept getting better and better which is a nice thing about soups. I love parsnips. This dish was a distant descendent of the soup I watched you make at my place for some big party. You put spanish mackerel on top which I've repeated with good sucess many times.
Not sure what to cook tonight.
sounds great, one day you and i will run a small Relais and Chateau:>)
Tell me when...
I'll stop you AFTER you've had me over for dinner.
Isn't it the most reliable pleasure. Lately I've been into birds. Ducks, geese, chickens and shoving lemon confit and tequila (easy to make and a great way to extend the whole kitchen idyll) up their arses and under their skin. Easy and delicious. I'd love to do a container garden on the roof if you're interested.
I'm interested. The question is will I still be interested a month after I start. I have a bad track record with growing things. This always seems like a serious indictment of my character.
I'm sure you have the skills so I should probably take you up on this.
In any case, could we eat things we grew up there? (No doubt I eat worse, so I'm guessing yes.)
Maybe we could put a web cam on it and start an urban garden page.
Yes, we could eat them. I kill all domestic plants myself and was known as the "evil eye" by my roommates, but I think if one had the incentive to eat the stuff it would go differently. We could start with simple things, herbs, lettuce and tomatoes, say. And a little compost area where 135 dwellers would be encouraged to drop off their coffee grinds, eggshells, etc. We could even buy worms to encourage the nitrogen cycle from the worm guy at Union Sq. Market; I've always longed to buy a bag of worms.
OK, let's do it.
We got worms over here in the season, big ones, anyone fish??
Nightcrawlers? My Dad used to take the hose and soak the flowerbeds, driving the worms to the surface. Then he'd come out at night with a flashlight and harvest them. Saved a fortune on bait, though you might get a surprise if you investigated that paper bag in the crisper.
