Last one for now. Just something to remember:
"I believe demolishing Hussein's military power and liberating Iraq would be a cakewalk."

Dick Cheney, "Meet the Press", March 16, 2003

Can anyone find a definitive link establishing the validity of this quote? (I'm sure it's accurate, I just want a link.) I'm looking too. I'll report back any findings.

[update: I believe this quote is not accurate. Discussion inside.]

The sentence originates with former arms negotiator Ken Adelman rather than with Cheney. Dunno if Dick ever said the c-word aloud but it is in his ghost-written Secret Diary.

I put all the "cakewalk" related quotes here on Saturday.

OK, I found the Meet the Press transcript, and if it's correct, Cheney did not say the above quote at that time. I got the quote from Ethel, and he linked to this Salon story which is in their pay section so it does me no good. I'd be obliged if anyone with a Salon subscription could confirm/deny that the above quote was attributed to Cheney on that date.

My bad. I looked back at the Salon story and the quote was indeed by Adelman rather than Cheney. The Cheney and Adelman quotes were contiguous on the page, but my browser showed them such that the Cheney attribution line was closer to the Adelman quote than was the Adelman attribution line.

The quotes I posted were all from the Salon story. All I did was change the order of them slightly. I even referred to Ken "Cakewalk" Adelman.

this is not an I told you so post, cuz I never said this would be a cakewalk -- this is more of a post just to say "Cakewalk" a few more times -- but on that day when the marines went out and killed 1000 iraqis (per local commanders, forget about the 3000 number they had at Centcom) while losing ONE marine -- these cakewalk comments seemed a little closer to the mark.

I don't think anyone could ever have predicted that the rear-guard attacks from the Fedayeen Saddam in the south would end up being _tougher_ in terms of time and perception than the republican guard outside of Baghdad...

This will be the only time I lower myself to warblog: I agree with Big Jimmy, but I must add that considering the might of our forces it goddamn better have been. Let's call it a let-them-eat cakewalk. Still, did even one guy have to die?
