Oh my god, what a bunch of dorks. I'm at the SOHO Apple store now waiting for the WWDC (World Wide Develolper Conference) satellite feed. There is a theatre on the second floor that is showing it. I figured there would be a few people here, but it is absolutely packed. The whole second floor is filled. I've never seen so many gadgets in one crowd at a time. Weird. It's like a Grateful Dead show for computer geeks. I feel strangely at home. Play by play in the thread below if it is possible for me.

OS X.

Panther (10.3) 4th major realease. 100 new features. Highlights:

#1 unix OS.

Revamped finder. Somewhat like the left column in itunes and iphoto. Is'nt this just the dock in the finder window?

Folder actions. Labels. Fast find (live like itunes? Not sure.)

Demos finder. Okay, looks cool. Very good for new users. Hides te weirdness of the unix file system layout.

Yes, search is live. Cool.

IDisk.

Autosync. Local folder auto syncs whenever you update folder. This works across machines.

Expose. New feature. Wow. Wow. This must be what piles turned into. MB is going to love this. Hard to explain, I'll say more later. It basically takes a cluttered desktop with multiple windows and instantly reduces the screen so that every window becomes a small visible thumbnail. This is for quickly finding a butied window. Very useful. Another example of quarz extreme paying off.

File vault. New feature. Encrypts and decrypts home directory on the fly. One check turns on / off.

Mail. Faster. Safari rendering built in for html. View by thread capability for reading.

Ipsec vpn built in.

Fax support built in. Fax... Button on every printing pane. Works w/ adress book.

Pixlet image format (codec.) Film resolution standard. No inter frame compression. 48 bits per pixel. Has a one half full depth setting can be decoded on 1 ghz g4 in real time. Hard to see on the sat feed how good (or bad) it looks.

Fasr user switching. (like XP.) OMG. The graphic is so cool. The screen literally flips over when you switch to another user account. Pull down in menu bar showing all accounts.

Font book. Pro font management. Nice nice nice. This was keeping designers frowm switching from 9 to 10.

IChat. Now iChat AV. Adds audio and vieo chat. "video conferencing for the rest of us." "Best ting we've ever done." Zeroconf. Works with any firewire camera. Audio works over dial up. (yes that means free phone calls over the net to anywhere in the world.) Steve is auio chatting with someone in Paris (quip while waiting to connect: "it takes a little while to negotiate with france...")

Al Gore makes incomming video chat call. "This thing is very cool." Funny.

Is Steve's camera the new apple cam?

XCode. New developer tools.

GCC 3.3

Distributed builds across a network! I think we'll be seeing this in a lot of places.

Predictive compile - constantly compiling in background as you are editing.

- jim 6-23-2003 10:33 pm

That's it.

Where is the 15 inch laptop?
- jim 6-23-2003 11:10 pm

iSight camera page at apple.com. This seems really cool to me. Classic Apple: a very simple design that doesn't really break any new ground - but designed and built so well, combined with being integrated so seamlessly with the OS, that it is a breakthrough. (The iPod is another great example of this.)
- jim 6-23-2003 11:56 pm

Here is a gallery of the new towers.
- jim 6-24-2003 7:02 pm

Nice. Are they aluminum?
- steve 6-24-2003 7:26 pm

Yes. I'm calling it the "cheese grater" tower. They've yet to show or mention the keyboard and mouse so there is some hope of a wireless bluetooth arrangement which would be cool. Two button mouse would be cool too, but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't wait to upgrade MB and H to these machines. Not any time soon though I fear. I need to wait for Panther (10.3) for the font management, and that's only promised "by the end of the year." So maybe Christmas will bring a new machine. I sure don't need it, but I just want to see it go...
- jim 6-24-2003 7:39 pm

For a few dollars less, here's the real deal!
- bruno 6-25-2003 6:10 pm
