There are a bunch of GPS (and GPS/PDA combo) related posts scattered throughout the comments. I'll post new stuff I find in this thread from now on.
There are two main expansion slot technologies for handheld devices: Compact Flash, and SDIO. Compact Flash is older, with a slightly larger form factor. Otherwise they are similar, accepting plug in cards that expand the capabilities of the devices they are plugging into. Memory is a popular thing to put on an expansion card, but all sorts of other things are possible.
iGolf Technologies has a GPS unit on an SDIO card due out in November. This will work in either Pocket PC or Palm OS devices. Previously there have been GPS units on Compact Flash cards, but never in the smaller SDIO format. This should let GPS be added to almost any device.
