I'm trying to put together an informal list of news related blogs to pass on to my friend A. who is contemplating moving his news media centered web site into a more weblog format (or maybe I don't have that right, but my task is the same regardless.) He knows there is something going on with "blogs" but I believe Drudge is as close as his personal experience comes. I'd like to point him to 10 - 20 real blogs that he could read to get a sense of what is going on out there. Maybe a very short summary along with each URL. Care to help?
Instapundit, Talking Points, Brad DeLong, Juan Cole, Daily Kos, all jump to my mind. A is a numbers man so, for instance, I think Kos is more interesting to him than, say, The Agonist, since Kos has lots of poll and media numbers while The Agonist is pretty much just repackaging stories from several media outlets for easy consumption.
No doubt there are much better examples. Feel free to help me out in the comments.
Today in Iraq has a daily breakdown of casualties (introduced each time with the phrase "Bring'em on") and keeps track of the major news stories in the War After We Won the War.
Steve Gilliard's News Blog quotes news stories at length (on a range of subjects) and follows them with smart, acerbic commentary.
i tried to do this for you one day but it just didnt happen. maybe ill try to use this thread and we can add to it as needed. i would tell said friend that if he wanted to click around that truth laid bear's ecosystem which is mainly focused on political blogs and ranks them by how many links they get from other bloggers would be a good place to start. to your list i would add matt yglesias , the recent graduate from harvard who now writes for the american prospect and their blog, tapped . crooked timber is an excellent group blog mostly populated with university professors from the us and britain. for snarky oft updated democrats theres eschaton counterspin and pandagon . calpundit is another popular center-left blog which joined josh marshall and matt yglesias as the popular triumvirate of leftleaning bloggers that initially supported the warmongering but then bailed at the last moment because ultimately they didnt trust the administration to follow through with their nation building rhetoric nor did they entirely buy the shifting war rationale but they bought into the neocon dream of a simple transition to a democratic middle east. sorry, long digression.
