Anandtech.com is a very old, very popular, and very well respected computer related site ("your source for hardware analysis and news" is the tag line.) Anand Lal Shimpi is the proprietor. He's always been a Windows guy, but he just bought a mac with the intention of using it as his main computer for 1 month and writing about the switch on his weblog.
This is a great test for the mac since he isn't going to pull any punches, but at the same time I trust him to have an open mind and tell the truth. Plus I figure I'll learn tons about XP since that is what he is comparing it to. Not ever having used that makes my fondness for the mac rather ungrounded, so I'm looking forward to following Anand's experiment.
Wow, the comments to his post contain a ton of advanced OS X information (keyboard shortcuts, undocumented modifier key behaviors, as well as tips and strategies for navigating the finder.) I learned several things I didn't know.
Well, the month is up. He makes a lot of critiques, but in the end decides to stay with the Mac as his main work machine. Plus he's going to add a Mac section to Anand Tech. That's a nice geek prestige win for the Mac platform.
What's next? There's a lot more, but I've made a few definite decisions:
1) I'm keeping the G5. (cmon, as "cool" as it is to jump on the AppleSucks bandwagon, when have I ever come off as a fanboy?)
2) There will be an AT Mac section.
3) I will continue this blog, although I'm not certain what direction it will take - it may eventually get moved (at least the Macdates) to the AT Mac section.
