Every time I get fed up with still having a crappy phone from the 18th century and prepare to hold my nose and just buy something better, even though nothing perfect is out right now, I will run across some rumor about a perfect phone that is about to be released. And thus the wait continues. It's really been a long time now since the Treo 600 died.
But wait I must, because some day one of these rumors is going to come true. Like maybe this one: Treo 800p out on March 15?Current features in the 800p will include 128MB RAM, a WiFi option, SD card, BT 2, EVDO of course, enhanced 320x320 screen, slimmer form factor and antenna, will use the same accessories as the 650, 3.2 MP camera. Shazam. That is the one. Nice nice nice. Praying this is true. And hopefully they don't mean 3/15/2007!
In case anyone else is curious, a friend wrote asking about an impending purchase of a 700w and whether that was still advisable. My reply:
If he needs a phone you should get the 700w, or else he'll end up like me and be waiting forever. I'm a little skeptical about the March 15th date. In a lot of ways it is just too soon. Or maybe it will be announced on 3/15 but not really be available until April or May. Or it could be even further off than that. The rumor is, literally, "I met this Palm executive in a bar and he told me..." Not too credible - but I want to believe.
Note that the 800 is 800p - meaning it runs the 'P'alm OS like the 600 and the 650. The 700w runs Windows Mobile. For religious reasons I don't want to run Windows - but that doesn't mean it's a bad choice.
The rumor doesn't specify carriers, but the it does say it runs on an EV-DO network. Only Verizon, and now just recently Sprint, have EV-DO networks, so if that part is right then it has to be one of those two. Again, this is highly speculative, but I would guess it would be on Sprint (since they had the Palm powered 600 and 650 at first, and Verizon already has the pretty similar 700w.)
Do you know if the 700w is even actually shipping? Could you buy one today? Seems like it was announced a while ago, but I still have yet to see it in the wild.
Nope. Looks like the 800p is not for real, or at the very least not at all close to release. A 3.2 megapixel camera from Palm? Yeah right. I should have figured.
Instead, there is good reason to believe the 700p is on the way from Sprint. Merlyn_3d in the treocentral forums supposedly has one, and from all the questions he's answered it seems legit to me.
Engadget has a picture they grabbed from the TC forums before they were taken down and watermarked to hell. Looks about the same as the 700w. The big difference is that the 700p runs Palm OS Garnet 5.4.9 which means I can actually buy this one (as opposed to the 'w' which run Windows Mobile making it a violation of the universal laws of physics for me to use it.)
But does Sprint have EV-DO turned on in NYC? (Merlyn_3d was reporting 300 kb/s speeds over EV-DO!)
Yes, Sprint's EV-DO network is turned on in NYC. I hope it doesn't take them months to release this phone. The carriers are *so* slow. I've never been able to get an explanation for this.
