My data center just raised my colocation pricing by 50% starting 4/1. Wow. That completely blows my mind. I liked that place but am looking for another provider now.
Shit! I guess their customers are kind of sitting ducks.
Hosting gets less expensive while costs of operation (fuel etc) jump more?
Not exactly sitting ducks since there are tons of providers in NYC. I've sent out a bunch of requests. The funny thing is that Peer1 was already kind of expensive! But I went with them anyway because I had a good feeling. This isn't the way to build customer loyalty. If I was further along it would be a pain to move it, since it would disrupt all my customers. But most people are still on the hurricane server, so if I move it now it's not that big of a deal. But maybe like you say fuel costs are up and this is just the way it is going to be now. We'll see what feedback I get from others.
For those who are more firmly ensconced there, it's like they're banking on the inconvenience of moving being worth that kind of price hike. Sick.
Already gotten some good feedback. Seems like I could get a lower price elsewhere. Could maybe even get a lower price inside the same data center from someone who buys a lot of bandwidth and then resells it. I think my provider just doesn't like dealing with people as small as I am.
Also got some feedback from them. If I can just get to 5 Mb/sec I would be back to where I want on price. I'm not quite ready yet though. Not sure what I will do yet. Might just stick it out for a few months until I get a better handle on how fast I can move up to 5 Mb/sec.
Sorry, I don't know what getting up to 5 MB/sec means. Is this like getting kicked out of a Manhattan restaurant because you're not running up a big enough tab?
Exactly. Except they aren't really kicking me out. They're just saying my first drink is going to cost 50% more. And because I'm only having one drink it seems especially painful to me. If I was having 5 or 10 drinks it wouldn't really be a big deal to pay 50% more for just the first one.
They are blaming power costs, and that does sound reasonable. That's got to be a huge expense. You saw all the AC in there, not to mention those racks of computers. And we all now power is much more expensive these days.
I do have multiple other options already, although I don't have entirely firm numbers from other people. Seems like I'd have to go to Secaucus NJ for the best numbers. How far away is that?
