iPhone media event going on right now. We should hear word about the SDK (software development kit - will allow 3rd party applications to be built for the iPhone.)

Looks like a big push into the enterprise.

Engadget paraphrasing Phil Schiller:

Push email -- huge request. They want great calendar integration. They want it pushed to them wherever they are. They want push contacts, global address list, Cisco IPsec VPN, they want authentication and certs, enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x), security policies, enterprise configuration tools, and they want remote wipe.

I'm excited to be the one to tell you today, we're doing ALL these things in the next release of the iPhone software.
Plus, they've licensed ActiveSync and are building Exchange Server right into the iPhone. Wow, they are moving fast. This is going to open up some big markets.

The SDK looks good. One time $99 fee to become a developer. Apple distributes all apps through App Store, an iTunes Music Store like app that runs on the iPhone, or you can buy through the iTunes store. Developers set the price and apple gets 30% which takes care of hosting, bandwidth, and clearing the transaction. If desired, the price can be free (I was worried about that.) Sounds reasonable to me. Certainly many independent developers can afford this. And I'm sure many will choose to give their apps away.

Apple will disallow some apps though, with porn, bandwidth hogs, and SIM unlock programs being specifically mentioned. When asked about VOIP Jobs said that over cellular it will be disallowed by over WiFi is fine. Great! I honestly didn't think they would allow that. Skype on the iPhone will be killer.

I think Apple is walking a very fine line, but so far doing it well. They are maintaining control of the ecosystem, but doing it as liberally as possible. It's enough to satisfy me although no doubt some will have complaints. As usual I'm in awe of the position Apple is putting themselves in with respect to future earning potential. My faith had wavered slightly over the last few months, but now I'm back to thinking they are going to do it. This really could be the dominant computing platform of the future - cocoa touch written apps distributed through Apple to multitouch capable mobile devices running OS X.

Oh, and the June launch of the SDK, along with the OS bump to 2.0, coincides nicely with the rumors for a June launch of the 3G next generation iPhone (the 3G 2G iPhone? :-)
