New iPhones are $199 and $299 (8 GB and 16GB.) 3G cellular (much faster) and GPS and longer battery life (we'll see about that.) Not much else different on the hardware front. Very nice software update though. They are really doing it right. (Maybe I'll post more on this if I get the time.) And their on line (web, email, remote backup) service .mac has been renamed 'MobileMe' and runs on the me.com domain (I'm meh on the name but that's a pretty nice domain - must have cost a few bucks.) The syncing is very tight between the iPhones and MobileMe. Contacts, email, even pictures are synced immediately over the air so your home machines and iPhone (and your shared calendars on your partners iPhone) all stay in sync all the time. $99/year is not cheap, but I think it's going to be so slick that you'll basically have to buy it. Good thing the phones are so cheap now - I guess that's the trade off.

Due on July 11. I'll be there.

the us has "competing" technologies which means incompatible systems. the good news about att is a) their network doesn't suck as much as it used to and b) the radio is compatible with european cell & data services.

it will synch the calendar and email wirelessly??
is there any way to upgrade my existing iphone to do this?
- julie 6-17-2008 5:36 pm

Yes, all generation one iPhones are getting the full software update when it hits (on or before July 11.) The only difference between the upgraded old model and the new is GPS and the faster 3G data network. Otherwise they will be exactly the same.

For full wireless syncing (assuming you are not connected to an Exchange Server) you will need a $99/year MobileMe account. This is the new version of .Mac. Yes it's expensive, but you actually do get a lot of stuff with it. It will full sync - in both directions - any changes to email, address book, calendar, safari bookmarks, and I think there is an option for photos as well. Changes are pushed up to your MobileMe account and then down to any devices or computers of yours connected to the internet. (So, yes, it will sync wirelessly, and it will do so in real time without any intervention - you don't have to tell it to sync or anything.) If you add a calendar event on your desktop it will show up on your phone without any intervention. And if you add a new phone number on your phone, it will show up in your address book on your desktop.

It's looking pretty slick if you can get past the price.

Will it work if your desktop is a PC?
- elisabeth 6-17-2008 7:02 pm

Yup. From here:

On a PC, MobileMe works seamlessly with the applications you use every day. You can use Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Contacts on XP or Vista. MobileMe automatically pushes your email, contacts, and calendars — and even your Safari or Internet Explorer bookmarks — to your other computers, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Plus, MobileMe will sync your computers if you have more than one as well as your mobile devices:
If you have more than one PC, use MobileMe to keep email, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks the same on all of them. If you have a Mac and a PC, they can share the same information. MobileMe will keep your computers, iPhone, and iPod touch in sync and up to date.

It doesn't seem able to deal with groups in any sophisticated way, but if you are just sharing the same calendar with someone else this would be pretty slick.

thanks. it almost seems to make more sense to just buy the new one...
