I don't like the sound of this:
ICANN, the organization that oversees internet addresses, will soon allow anyone to apply for his very own generic top-level domain (gTLD). In other words, you'll soon have the power to put almost anything at the end of your url, eschewing existing top-level domains such as ".com" or ".edu."

ICANN estimates it will begin taking applications in April or May of next year. The fee for each application will be "in the low six figures in American dollars," and the first customized gTLDs will likely arrive in the fourth quarter of 2009.
But I guess it's an opportunity for someone clever. You just need to think of a character combination that will let people make cool sounding URLs (sort of like how del.icio.us made clever use of .us.) Off the top of my head I think .tion would be a good one. Dave?

daim.ler

veriz.on

ib.m

air.bus

is my prediction--not clever, just a way to get the brand out there with less characters

It's going to be a gold mine. Every major corporation is going to have to give $100K for their name. How can ibm not buy .ibm? Same for GE, GM, Ford, HP, BP, Exxon (.xon?), etc... They'll just have to do it. That's going to mean, at least, millions of dollars.

On the other hand, it does make some sort of sense. Dosn't support.ibm and store.gap and downloads.apple sound right? The TLD .com never really meant anything anyway. Digitalmediatree.com isn't a commercial entity and slashdot.org isn't a non profit organization, and almost none of the .net domains are actual network operators. So the whole thing is sort of screwed up already.

But there is a certain uniformity to the current system that I like. Still, if I could grab .tion I think I would.
