Still haven't pulled the trigger on the iPhone [typical - ed.] Didn't really want to stand in line so I'm waiting for things to settle down. Looks like they sold over 1 million in the first weekend. It took them over 2 months to do that with the first one. Battery life is down thanks to the power hungry 3g radio chip, but it's still longer than other 3g phones. Not really a problem for me, but I understand it is a big deal for some people.

Overall I think the new software is a bigger deal than the new phone. The App Store is very well done. Over 10 million downloads already.

Check out this one: Zeptopad. Very nice. (I want to know more about "shake and share", that looks clever.)

all phones should come with two batteries

This is one of the most frequent complaints about the iPhone. I think the real reason is just that Steve Jobs doesn't think his customers should be doing something like changing a battery. I think to him that would be like Mercedes having their customers change their own oil.

But there are other, more technical reasons that might play a part as well. Namely, if you don't have a removable battery (which requires part of the case to be removable of course,) you can make the entire case much more sturdy using less, and lighter, materials. Also you can make the entire phone slightly smaller (since a removable battery needs to fit into a space that is itself walled off from the rest of the phones innards and those walls have thickness.) And finally, although I don't know for a fact that Apple uses this technology, batteries can now be made in any irregular 3d shape a manufacturer wants - so it might be the case that the battery is a very odd shape that maximizes its size while minimizing free space inside the phone (since the battery sort of "leaks" into all the free nooks.) If the last part is true it would be hard to make it removable.

Still, for road warrior business types like yourself the iPhone may not be right simply because of the battery. But most people like you use blackberrys anyway, so you're not exactly the target market at this point. And by the next gen iPhone battery tech will probably have improved enough.

What about their reprehensible behaviour with regard to credit checks, ID, social security numbers, and connection fees? It's just a phone. One of my co-workers got in a scrap (justified on his part by the sound of things) in the line yesterday because of how they were treating him in an Apple store. I'm put off by the whole palaver.

If the sales people are not handling it graciously then that's Apple's fault. But all the credit check stuff is demanded by AT&T, not Apple. The cellular carriers (and telecoms in general) are horrible horrible companies. Eventually Apple will be able to dump them, but it's going to be at least several more years (and maybe 5 - 10) before we start getting alternatives.

Still, Apple employees should be gracious even when the problem is not their fault.
