I'm not a graphic designer, but I'm trying to learn enough to get by. Luckily there are tons of great designers out there who like to share their knowledge. Like: Design tip: never use black. Is this correct? I don't know. But the argument makes sense to me. And I use black all the time. I guess I'll try to change my ways and see what happens.
I wouldn't take it too serously. I've heard this in terms of painting, coming down from the era of impressionism and optical color theory, but I don't think it means much in terms of graphic design, or a lot of painting for that matter. Monet wouldn't use black, but don't tell Malevich not to. You could always get into the question of what really is "black" but if it turns out the black you're using isn't really Black then it won't matter anyway.
