this link has a pretty good run down. Basically heavy duty salt-use on roads puts a lot of chloride and other nasty stuff into the water and soil affecting plants and fish and agriculture and all that other stuff that gets affected by pervasive chemicals. I dunno if there's a big environmental impact from indvidual use on steps and sidewalks. I'm a bit torn about the issue, cause pedestrian mobility is also important, esepcially old folks tottering off to get groceries in the ice and snow.
