When I was a kid, we never locked our doors, except for when the small town rodeo was on. Although we lived on the opposite side of town from the fairgrounds, my mom was terrified that the 30 or so midway workers, FROM THE STATES!, would target our 3 bedroom bungalow (totally identical to all the other nearby homes) for robbery and some other unspeakable acts. I was intrigued, but she refused to go into any detail about what these unspeakable acts might be.
