informative thread here about jaywalking in Toronto. Note: don't be alarmed by the jumpy cat fur - it's not actually a cat having sex, it's just sped-up breathing.

Janice Etter from the Pedestrian Planning Committee has this to say about the bogus $50 ticket the police have been
issuing for 'jaywalking'.

"We're the people who are fighting this ridiculous crackdown on "mid-block crossings" and we agree entirely with your sentiments. One of the marks of a civilized city is that you can walk across a street anywhere -- so long as you do it with care -- and not (a) get ticketed by the police, or (b) get hit by a vehicle that thinks it owns the road!"

"Our first question is going to be whether a person still has the ticket and what's written on it. And what the individual
has actually been charged with."

The issue here is that there is no such thing as jaywalking,
in case you're wondering where this is going. It's a figment
of the police's and the media's imagination, and has no legal definition in Canadian law, the Ontario Highway Traffic Act
or any municipal by-law."

She would love to hear from anyone who has received a ticket for this ...

I have been searching, unfruitfully for a concise defination of jaywalking. I want to know if living in the city of Toronto, can I legally cross the streen in front of my house to visit my neighbor without breaking the law, or do I need to walk down to the corner where there is an intersection. Maybe someone could direct me to the exact wording of the law.
