Hey Mark that's way cool. I was playing around with embedded tables earlier. It really seems slow, which kind of surprised me.
Mark did a really nice remix here.
Sally, came to see your remixes thanks to Geoffrey Rockwell's blog. The slowness you observe may be due to the browser resizing the images. If I read the source correctly you are relying on the height and width attributes of the img element to resize the images. You might get the desired speed by resizing the source files to match the dimensions specified in the valutes to the height and width attributes and saving as separate files and adjusting the value of the src attribute accordingly.
Geoffrey was wondering what to call these exquiste animations. I think Mark hit it right on with the term "remixes".
The term "remix"--from the DJ world--applies when someone takes someone else's song or track and digitally alters it to the remixer's own signature style. It was a pretty worn concept by the time I started applying it on my page--half in jest--to the practice of people tweaking other people's animated gifs. In music remixes are only occasionally as good or better than the original, and the heyday of the remix was about ten-fifteen years ago. In other words it's just a placeholder name until a better one comes along. (Doing what I can to nip my own lazy jargon in the bud here.)
thanks Francois! I think you are right about the resizing. It's a bit disapointing, since the elegant part of doing it with the html is only having one image to take up space on the server. I've been wondering what to call these things too. Remixes is perfect when someone else gets involved. You should look at Tom Moody's animations as well, if you haven't already.
oops, Tom and I posting at the same time. I defer to his take on "remix" due to the fact that he knows what he's talking about when it comes to music terminology and I don't .
the term "animated gifs" is maybe a bit long, but accurate. Not sure if Mark's new graphic PHP related explorations are gifs...are they?

--to be filled in by "the street" but only if the practice is sufficiently widespread for the need to arise.
hah. love the street.
The other day I was struggling to describe the appropriation process succintly, and remembered Tom's use of the word "remix". It fits well, but it is kinda 80's. "Sampling"? That's old too. "App Art"? "Re-App Art?"
My PHP-related stuff ends up as "MoGIFs" (to badly coin a word), but that's the end of a process involving several steps: (mostly) algorithmically generated animated GIFs.
