I am always fascinated by a heron rookery. Such an incredible prehistoric feeling to this image.
Great Blue Herons really do look like pterodactyls. This glimpse of big weird birds in dead tree swamp was our reward for walking a long way down a bumpy forest lane, after abandoning the rental car, and being swarmed by mosquitos and deer flies. The local radio station had a survey running: "Do you think about West Nile virus when you are out of doors?" We also saw a bunch of nifty ferns, wild flowers, a frog, and a lot of millipedes crossing the path, about 5 of them, which is way too many millipedes. I prefer those guys one at a time, or maybe even not at all (especially in the bathroom, which is were I normally see them).
