I mentioned Angela Leach here recently - she has a show opening at the Doris McCarthy Gallery tomorrow (Wednesday) night. There's a free bus to shuttle us downtowners out for the show, leaving from 401 Richmond at 5:30 pm, heading back from UTSC at 8 pm. Last time I took the shuttle bus to DMG I saw a cat leap for a hanging birdfeeder and then dangle in the air. It failed to get a bird but put on a great show nonetheless.

posting this jpeg was dumb. Looking at the real painting (and it's kindred other artworks in the show) was so physiological that I got embarrassed about feeling that stoned in a public space. This one above was my favourite - it looks like rolling landscape, and delivers almost as much sensory satisfaction too! All the work is big and trippy and hits a lot of neurological buttons at once. Also, I just found out that Leach has been using the same colour palette for all her paintings for many years. It's a great big long-term conceptual project, which makes me like it all the more. All pistons firing! (or whatever that phrase is)

firing on all cylinders gets 222,000 google hits and firing on all pistons gets 1,360 hits. popular opinion suggest both terms are alright. nice palette, great paining.

I find her practise inspiring, not because her crafting is so precise (I do love that sort of thing, though) but because her crafting makes sense within the logic of the finished works. I also admire her persistence, the work will go in and out of style, but she will continue on her own path at her own pace.

Another artist that crafts her work within the logic of the finished piece is Julie Voyce, although the physical appearance can sometimes appear crude, the entirety is very sophisticated.

I guess I would call it a technical intention. (and I love technicalities and logistics)

I was thinking about Julie Voyce in this context as well. I know that she will intentionally limit her palette for a certain period of time. She is also rigorous and persistent, and, also like Leach, her work feels airy and unconstricted.
