I'm definitely getting on the bus tomorrow (March 16th) to Doris McCarthy Gallery for the opening of Return, Afghanistan, a show of work by Zalmaļ, an Afghani photographer. I've seen some of these pictures in a book and they are gorgeous. It's timely. And the opening is going to be really fun, with good food and music too. As always, the bus is FREE!
Zalmaļ: Return, Afghanistan
March 16 - May 12, 2006
Opening: March 16, 2006, 6-9 pm
With traditional Afghan dance, food and music
Official Remarks by Ambassador Omar Samad, Afghanistan Ambassador to Canada at 7 pm
Rubab and tabla performance by Yasser Karimzad, James Kippen and Atiq Nikzad
Free bus departs 401 Richmond Street West at 6:30 pm and returns from UTSC at 9 pm
My goodness what a great event. It is one thing to thumb through a copy of National Geographic looking at images of Afghanistan, quite another to stand in a gallery in Scarborough FULL of Afghani youth, talking, laughing pointing at the pictures and taking their own shots of each other and the art with their cell phone cameras. The music was cool... that Rubab is a weird and nifty thingy with tons of intricate knobs and sympathetic strings. Atiq Nikzad was great. There is a picture of him (I think!) and his instrument here. The dancers were lustrous, confident, graceful young women, gorgeous in every way. The place was packed. Little children sat on the floor and pointed out images to each other from the slide show running behind the musicians. The food was extremely yummy. Doris McCarthy Gallery's Director/Curator, Ann MacDonald, is brilliant. She's my hero.
I agree with you about the gallary. Music was great too. Though I should mention that Nikrad is also a persian name but the musician at this event was Atiq Nikzad.
thanks for the correction! I made the change. I was looking for images of a Rubab and found the image of Atiq in a list of credits for the film Return to Kandahar, which is where I got the spelling.
