Panya Clark Espinal
The Jack Pine Remembered 2003 aluminum, steel, paint, 15' x 6' x 6'
Thief 1999-2000 wooden trunk, wood, latex paint
Tart 2000 wooden pie safe, wood, latex paint
Four men who I never met and whom never knew each other but whose
bloodlines converge in my children 2003 aluminum, latex paint, powder coating
clockwise from upper left (from varying angles): Pedro Espinal, Juan de Dios Merlos,
Almeron Husband, and Avdeij Plistik
nice grids! Panya Clark Espinal is one smart cookie. This early work proves it:

Aside from that being very cool work, it's triggered a memory of a childhood toy I had which consisted of a wooden grid like that, and hundreds(if not thousands) of small wooden pegs of various colours that fit into it. It would be banned as a choking hazard these days, but was very cool, in a proto-pixel sort of way.
Oh, yeah, the best toy ever. I've still got a couple of the pegs.
latex paint looks so fucking sexy, i mean the work is great, but wow i love the smooth sheen of latex
Fuck Yeah!
I'm glad someone else noticed that, I love latex paint. Pre-tinted, pre-mixed, it's nothing but the colour it is, and Panya's colour choices are so high end designer brand. (mine look more like a Hudson Bay brand)

now that you are here, can we talk about lawler?
ase
Shit Anthony, you know way more about Louise Lawler than I do.
i was hoping for a comment, wanted to know what you think?
Anthony, are you drawing a connection between Lawler and Clark Espinal? I can see something in it for sure.
I can see a connection too, but probably more so from Panya's 1988 installation Research & Discovery. where she custom fabricated, in every detail, chosen objects form the National Geographic.
I'll ask her.
I also see connections in the Terrarium Project that she did with Crystal Mowry in 2006.
the surfaces i think, mostly, but ive had her in my head recently...
