The recording executives allegedly discouraged Karen from playing drums in public. The thinking was that American audiences could not handle a girl drummer. - L.M. 11-23-2007 2:11 am

I'm kind of amazed at how shiny Karen's hair was, and those teeth were so white. This was all shot before she started living on three cheerios a day. - L.M. 11-23-2007 11:14 am
Today's xkcd is going with the Carpenters thing, too. Must be something in the air.

Seasonal Affective disorder is probably in the air, since the Carpenters made music for people who want to spend their lives rolled up in a blanket.
That said, I still love Karen Carpenter's voice. (R.M. blames her controlling brother for her anorexia, But since he sues everyone who writes anything about him, I will blame the record company execs who wouldn't allow her to play the drums in public, because that was the best weirdest thing about her) - L.M. 11-23-2007 9:32 pm
The Todd Haynes version of her life is too brilliant not to be embedded. (thanks for that link because we were actually talking about this film yesterday)

When I was younger, I saw part of a Carpenter's TV special where Karen rapidly whips through a percussion studio, playing a flawless series of fast rolls and riffs on a batterie of various tympani and roto-toms, with an intensely goofy grin on her face.
I can see why some executives may have discouraged this, because I was completely baffled at the time.
