Happy FAMILY DAY to all citizens of Ontario! (such an exciting new holiday!!!!!)
Joyce Wieland - Bear and Spirit of Canada 1971 bronze, 8 x 19.5 x13.2 cm
I just received a violent dangerous enraged email from Anthony Easton, the sort of email that feels like a chair has been thrown at your head. (The kind I send out all the time) He demanded to know: "HOW COME YOU NEVER TOLD ME THAT JOYCE WEILAND DID A SCULPTURE WHERE THE SPIRIT OF CANADA IS FUCKED BY A BEAR"
Well, knowledge is power in the short run, dear heart, and we withhold a lot of information on this blog in order to manipulate everyone's feelings the market.
Happy Family Day Lorna!
I am glad to have you in my art family.
I also find Joyce Wieland's "Bear and
Spirit of Canada" (1971) bronze, thrilling!!!

Thanks Carla. I should do a longer post of Wieland's images. (even though she was canonised as a Canadian Art Saint, a lot of people don't see her stuff anymore)
I was thinking we should change "Family Day" to "Pet Day." Weiland's sculptures can still be our mascots, though.
I would like to change the name to "Family of One Day". That is one amazing sculpture.
I wish it was life sized and installed in the tulip patch on Parliament Hill.
i was going to do a riff of her venus of scarborough (CCCA link) called cerne abbas of king street, but then i got to this line in the application: "Submissions that include socially unacceptable elements (text and/or images) will not be considered "
Yup, it's a boy.
Maybe he's just jealous is more likely!!
Maybe what that bear wants from the spirit of canada is nothing more than a blueberry fritter.

I think we just tied in blueberries and bear fluffing quite nicely.
whats happening in that pic?
do you need assistance? (ya gotta watch to the end)
