The late Reid Diamond once said this was a song about death so now here's a toast to the late D.F.W.

Excellent post. I believe the song was written by Jimmy Webb, the same guy who gave us By the Time I get to Phoenix, Galveston, Up Up and Away and MacArthur Park.

I did a link to Jimmy Webb singing it, but I think it's awful. On the other thread Bill mentioned that Glen Campbell 'had a way of making Webb songs his own'.

The youtube search produced a lot of surprises, I was happy that so many R&B artists covered it. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it's a pretty damn soulful song.

The Dennis Brown reggae verson was also a revelation.

Glen Campbell had the sort of face that repelled me when I was a kid, now I find old footage of him really compelling:

Ha! I love when pissy comments like this come into a music discussion:

Don't try & figure out what kind of lineman this guy is -- it doesn't exist. Think about it: a lineman from the COUNTY? There ARE no county linemen in the U.S.! The telephone linemen work for AT&T or Bell, the electrical linemen work for Edison or Consumers Power, the telegraph linemen (when there was such a thing) worked for AT&T. No county employee can touch their wires! I mean, the liability alone would prohibit it! I think it just sounded romantic to say the guy worked for the county, kind of lonely sounding, more so than if he had a cushy job working for AT&T!
I'm also embarrased to say that I never knew where Wichita was.

his new album, is pretty good, if in that rick rubin american recordings vibe that nearly every artist close to death has attempted in the last few years (ie kris kristofferson, porter wagoner, jessi colter, johnny cash, neil diamond, etc)

I'll check it out Anthony, (but I was sort of hoping for a compliment from you on how well I exploited crucifiction imagery for this post)

That was very cool. All of them seemed to "open" up at once. How did you do that? Cheers! I am off to look for how to fix my bra!

When you paste the embed code into your site you can add some extra commands at the end of the URL for the actual youtube video.
(just little tricks)

I showed my students the script from this page http://nastynets.com/?p=412 and told them to play with it, one of them stumbled on to this flickering effect that only works in firefox (the overlap works in both firefox and IE).

And her name is... (she also likes the <font> tag):

ELLEN STAFFORD
