All I knew about Minnie Riperton was her big AM radio hit.

I remember what Rotary Connection LP covers looked like from working in a record store but didn't hear what they sounded like till drum and bassers 4Hero covered "Les Fleur." Very 60s combination of psychedelia, folk and soul.
"Lovin' You" came after Riperton's re-emergence as a Stevie Wonder protege.
It's interesting how people are using YouTube as an audio jukebox these days with the worst kind of visual filler. The photos accompanying "Respect," for example. Stock images of flowers, snapshots of fast food restaurants... People on the internet are insane. - tom moody 1-12-2009 1:48 am
I'm a sucker for fan videos. - L.M. 1-12-2009 3:55 am
you tube quickly became my default jukebox resource. the video of the spinning (obscure) 45 label is net classic "fan" fodder. followed closely by the Non (and near) sequitur slide show. in this case the fast food joints gave a generic retro visual accompaniment. another nonprofessional spontaneous hobby driven creative net activity. bravo pre-net collector culture!!! - bill 1-12-2009 1:30 pm
Well, I'm a known grouch but I think it's like watching people's boring vacation slides (in general--not talking about Riperton in particular). I would rather close my eyes and listen to the music. MTV conditioned us to want visuals even when the uploader's got literally nothin'. - tom moody 1-12-2009 8:37 pm
I enjoy looking at peoples holiday snaps, because I'm whipping through them to find something I can use. (I ignore their accompanying narratives, nodding at the wrong times) - L.M. 1-12-2009 8:49 pm
I get really shirty about vacation snaps, even though I love them. If the person wants me to take them from their hands one at a time I refuse to look at them. The whole pile, at my speed, or nothing. And usually I'm such a nice person. - M.Jean 1-12-2009 9:26 pm
the funny thing is that music is not just audio. there is a long history of the visual component in musical performance. otherwise the beatles wouldnt have worn suits. start with the age of live witness, then move forward to modern film or video documentation, then on to the mtv formalized vignettes of the later tv era.
it can be useful to see relevant of the period still photo montage or silent film or video images tied to a digital transcription of vinyl. especially images of an artist who is somewhat unfamiliar. that is what we are mining here, the unfamiliar. further the internet is a simultaneously audio and visual medium now. you tube fan-videos are fed by amateur volunteer enthusiasts. although it was possible to create an audio-only net resource it was the you tube version that took. me looking to rediscover the nearly forgotten or merely otherwise inaccessible (not immediately available, free and linkable) am more than willing to accept the gift as is (indeed grateful for the tainted resource). im even (like lm) amused (but not too damned amused) by the primitive genre of fan-vid visuals for lack of a better alternative.
in fact they may even be skating in under the radar in said format otherwise they would be quashed the way of napster mp3 file sharing since you tube material can pass as advertisements for salable cd quality recordings or itune files. - bill 1-12-2009 9:58 pm
Yeah, somewhat like how p0rn used to pretend to have an "educational purpose"--I hadn't thought about how the boring pictures were camouflaging evil file sharing of music*. In that case I'm all for it.
*"What is this grandpa's crime?"
"He gave the gift of music."
"You mean he didn't buy the gift of music?"
"No."
"Prison and $200,000 fine." - tom moody 1-12-2009 10:21 pm
True Bill, you will never love this shit as much as I do:

"Lovin' You" is the only song I can play on the Concertina (which has a limited set of chords available). Love those birds SFX.

L.M. - I just dropped in after a bit of an absence and what do I find but this work of staggering genius. I was haunted especially by the image of the prostrate woman holding the red card with the (un)happy face - this piercing little punctum will cause me many sleepless nights, I'm sure.
To be honest I never thought that there could be visuals cheesy, er, I mean powerful enough to go with this orgasmic tune but, obviously, I have a limited imagination. - vid i. (guest) 1-13-2009 2:40 am
Sunday Devotionals - Rotary Connection with Minnie Riperton
