Libby Hague's excellent installation One Step at a Time is on at the Art Gallery of Mississauga until May 10 (click the link for an essay by me).
Terrific essay, and Libby is a brilliant artist. However, it kills me to promote anything for the Art Gallery of Mississauga as they canceled a lot of scheduled exhibitions when Stuart Reid left and Robert Freeman took over back around 2001. Fortunately the artist Gunilla Josephson already had a signed contract when she was informed that her show was canceled five weeks before the opening. She hired the magnificent Bonny Czegledi to haul the board's asses to her Bay Street law office and set them straight on their contractual obligations.
Those of us without signed contracts were treated to weasle words.
ouch!
One other art gallery tried canceling a bunch of artists' exhibition contracts around that time, but Bonny Czegledi was on that case as well. Her name now strikes terror in the hearts of public gallery directors everywhere.
Oddly enough, it hardly happens anymore.
This is not a reason to miss a great show. Whatever one thinks of the gallery, the artist's work should be the determining factor.
How did you make that leap?
(We're promoting it aren't we? We love Libby's work) (and Libby too.)
