9 different people's brains, aligned at the thalamus.
FYI: the thalamus is that sort of egg-shaped bit in the middle.
PS: there are bits of non-brain stuff sneaking in here and there that I didn't erase very cleanly. If I was using the MRI software FSL instead of Photoshop I would've used the "Brain Extraction Tool (BET)" and this gif would've been cleaner around the edges.
Would the Brain Extraction Tool erase the outer bits that orbit around the brain in some kind of strange vortex? I find them somewhat comforting.
They should be comforting! Those are remnants of the body that I didn't erase properly because I was rushing. A brain needs a body if it's going to be any use at all. And yes, the BET would get rid of them, but only if it was set up properly.
I just found out today that "skull stripping" — another term for what the Brain Extraction Tool does — is necessary to provide total anonymity for subjects who've been scanned. It sort of makes sense, because it would be technically possible for someone to model a face if they had a 3D image of the skull.
That's how they found out what Jesus looked like. The "Ontario Consultants on Religious Tolerance" have a little blurb about it here (http://www.religioustolerance.org/chr_jcfa.htm), and supposedly there's a documentary on the subject as well. He sure as hell was no Jim Caveziel!
Anyway, too bad we can't do a similar sort of reconstruction to see what Jesus' brain looked like. I'll bet it didn't glow.
I love the end of that article!
