A shark biting a killer whale in half? Preposterous..unless of course the shark is wearing a hat and sunglasses. I'd like to see that shark do battle with Cool Sun Dude. Anyhow, many thanks to Joester for sending the link to what might be the most cathartic Flash game ever (lots of very excellent prey).
Yay for Leah Sandals. She posted an excellent report on the Toronto Biennial forum that happened at MOCCA on Saturday. I was secretly hoping she'd do this, since I couldn't make it and I've been curious. It sounds like there was a pretty provocative (and entertaining) presentation by Philip Monk. Leah herself also makes a really good point about local expectations, and puts out a call for conversation.
You also have to be realistic; Canada may be a wonderful country (I certainly like to think so) but it is also a rather small one in terms of population. I don’t think it’s very realistic to aim for more than (or lament being) “a second or third tier country” at Venice. Sometimes all you can do is do your best, be a pro, market the hell out of it, and appreciate the coverage you get—which I’d bet is actually a fairly high proportion relative to Canada’s population size.Go and tell her what you think!
Then again, maybe I’m missing some data. What is this other country that people think Canada should be “equal to” artistically? Or a city that people think Toronto should be thought of in the same league with (other than Vancouver, people!). If you have ideas beyond the usual unreachably-megalopolis suspects (NYC, London, Paris) please share in the comments. Is it that Sydney and Auckland are outshining TO? What’s a reasonable point of comparison?

I am poaching this post from Ovvlvverk because, like millions of other people, I can't stop watching this owl... and the streaming comment feed is hilarious. People ask all the questions I have, like "What is she doing now?" "What is that noise?" "That baby looks weird, is it okay?" "Where's the male?" "When is the last egg gonna hatch?" etc. And then other people, who have been watching the darn thing 24-7 and know the score answer all the questions. And there are lots of really bad owl puns. Also the guy who set the whole thing up is a real ornithologist and every once in a while he comes on and gives little science talks about owls in another video window. And the footage is just gorgeous, especially the day time camera. And sometimes at night the father owl shows up with big dead rodents. Log in if you can, because, based on the owl's behaviour this morning, the last egg is supposedly gonna hatch today. |
Wow. best art poster ever.
