Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History of Punk in Toronto and Beyond 1977-1981 by Liz Worth
This book is the dorky younger sibling of Please Kill Me, the classic history of the New York Punk scene. It's not as snappy and as hip as its predecessor, but it is more thoughtful and nuanced in the commentary. Things we learned (which we might already know): 1) The singer for The Viletones could provoke people at times. 2) Canadian popular media culture at the time (radio, journalism, music distributors) had little interest in promoting this new scene. 3) The influx of heroin fragmented the original punk community. 4) & More details inside.

How Bluegrass Music Destroyed My Life by John Fahey.
Words fail me: I utterly lack an adjective or metaphor or even an excerpt to describe this, except to say that this is one of the strangest and most-unclassifiable books I have ever read. Fahey was a genius musician (see below) but also a crackpot visionary whose unique insights are sometimes disturbing. (also: it is hilarious that the book sleeve designer used a flat-pick in the graphic, despite the fact that Fahey was a finger picker, but that just adds to the sense of oddity).

The Rest Is Noise; Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross
Serious 20th Century "Classical" Music diverged off from the popular culture audience, who were scared away by the atonal screeching. Or did it? The author lovingly describes some of his favourite moments in this genre of music, and makes the argument that this "difficult" art has finally infiltrated our current pop culture in movie soundtracks and electronica experiments.

The author takes us back, way back, to a long lost mythological era: Albion, Atlantis, Avalon... and then: just add psychedelic drugs & electronic recording technology: the past is new again, for a brief moment in time...
This is an excellent book if you wish to be lost in a reverie, where peasants sang and danced in pursuit of a long lost age... with intelligent commentary.
