My fascination with Bergman began when I was rather young.
I saw this image in a textbook (Time-Life Library: Scandinavia).
This made me really want to see his films.
Winter gloomy dark days are the perfect times for Scandinavian Angst: Black & White films by Ingmar Bergman! Yay!
"In an interview in 2004, Bergman said that he was "depressed" by his own films and could not watch them anymore."
This depressingness is only part of what makes his films interesting. But it's not all about gloom, what makes him interesting is his emotional honesty, his philosophical curiousity, his relaxed moments, the excellent Sven Nykvist cinematography, and mostly his essential uniqueness.
The Seventh Seal/Det sjunde inseglet (1957);
A mediæval knight returns from the crusades and has a game of chess with death.
Along with a traveling theatre show competing with some religious fanatics for attention from the peasants.
This is one of his most famous films, and in my opinion, this is his best film;
Intense, gruesome, and also kinda funny in moments...
Wild Strawberries/Smultronstället (1957);
A bitter old man who went to art-school long ago goes on a weekend road trip with some young beatniks.
Hilarity ensues.
Summer with Monika/Sommaren med Monika (1953);
Young lovers indulge in a romantic escape.
This film was successfully sold to international film distribution markets as an erotic "Swedish Sexploitation" product;
but voyeurs got a bit more complex emotion than they quite expected...
Persona/Persona (1966);
This is his definitive 'experimental' feature film.
If you like to parse metaphors, go crazy!
It has the most erotic scene without nudity ever made.
The sun hats are really nice.
