Why I feel like watching playoff hockey...
1) eye/brain candy
- keep your eyes on the puck!
- fluidity of movement: seemingly random, game-changing events happen unexpectedly, yet observation of patterns and energies allows for anticipation in the moment, ie: hope*
- temporal mind fuck: time speeds up and slows down in a variety of juxtapositions with the ticking clock
2) narrative structure
| 1st period | 2nd period | 3rd period |
regular season |
starts off exciting, ends boring |
long and boring, ends the same way the 1st period ended |
final 7-3 minutes may or may not be interesting |
|
play off hockey |
exciting |
tense like a chess match |
tense like a chess match played by exhausted people (all hell breaks loose) |
sudden death overtime aaaugh! |
*note: I say "hope" because I usually don't care very much who wins and just want to see the hockey players do cool stuff. For real fans that would have to read "hope & dread."
