Fresh
When Eric Tevrow lured Martin Burge from the chef de cuisine post at Gotham Bar & Grill to sign on at Fresh, his elegant new seafood restaurant, Tevrow sweetened the deal with something even better than prime Tribeca real estate: first dibs on the daily Eastern-seaboard catch, courtesy of Early Morning Seafood, Tevrow's wholesale purveyor to star chefs like Alain Ducasse and Gray Kunz. Burge makes the most of his inside sources with rillettes of gaspy cod and finnan haddie, Ipswich fried clams, "Kobe beef" of bluefin toro, and an array of whimsically named "prime cuts," like baby-back halibut ribs steamed in kelp. Fellow Gotham alum Joseph Murphy dishes up seasonal desserts like wild-strawberry shortcake and warm blueberry financier.

and FRESH it was....steamers, fried clams were just right (but drop the napkin in the box presentation), kobe toro was so tender, halibut was in a nice broth and while not amazing was very good (i felt they were both a hair overcooked but last night was day 2), cerviche was interesting but not what i like to eat in general, my smoked fish and potatoe salad was delish.....desserts didnt rock me, wine list is great w/ plenty of $30ish bottles), everyone of the wines by the glass are worth tasting....i would go back

i went... loved the sparkling vouvray, fantastic gazpacho with crab (great soup with a buzz)...and then i had the kobe toro -- which was great: not seared, but slowcooked instead, simple glaze, not saucy, great bitter broccoli rabe alongside it, altogether wow...BUT, I had to admit finally, TOO MUCH for me, just too damn rich, as an entree!! imagine that, defeated by a piece of fish...(don't mean to suggest i didn't eat every bite, but the last few were a little stressed)...my suggestion: order it as an appetizer for 2. only slight downer was a glass of long island chardonnay which i ordered basically just to see if the waitress knew something special about wine (she didn't)...man am i happy to have a new fish place in my soon to be new neighborhood. having said all of which, MAN it ain't cheap. maybe once a month then...? twice? just get the clams as takeout...? icthyomaniacs unite!!

We went (4 people) last night. It's still early. The room isn't finished (this made MB happy, as we opened a few without them being actually done.) The staff is very nice, and tries hard, but isn't really together yet. On the up side, we called at 8:00 on Saturday night for a 9:30 reservation and didn't have any trouble. I like going at this stage, but you have to know what you're in for, and not be too critical of things that can easily change with a few weeks practice.

To second Big Jimmy: MAN it ain't cheap. The crab gazpacho with crab was good. The fried clams were very good. The lobster roll was great (sort of a weird app though, wish I could get that for lunch.) The tuna was probably my favorite app. Others in our group thought the ceviche was best.

Big Jimmy is totally on with the kobe toro review. Since we were sharing everything the richness wasn't too much of a problem. Everyone agreed it was one of the best/most interesting fish dishes we'd had. Melts in your mouth. Really unusual.

The haddock (fish and chips basically) was top notch. The halibut ribs were a little boring I thought. As was the barracuda (but both still good.)

We had to beg for no desserts. The other vouvray (the sec, not the sparkling that B.Jimmy mentioned) is quite nice to start. But what's with the wine list organization? Three sections (hillside, valley, coastal,) and each section has wines from all over the world mixed in (mostly France with some US and Austrailian and Italian.) That seems ridiculous. For instance, two wines from Chablis are in different sections, as if a wine on the hillside in Chablis has more in common with some wine from a hillside in Australia than with another Chablis from a few hundred feet below. I could be wrong, but this seems kind of stupid.

If it wasn't for the price Fresh would be in my high rotation. But no way can I afford to eat there much. Still, I'll be interested to see how they progress.

where can you eat cheap (good fresh fish)??, i find the place normal NY price, not much more than eating at Lupa or scores of places and below the high end spots...sorry about the LI Chard, it was not on the menu when I ate....as for the Toro too rich, no way, I almost ordered another for dessert...the list thing is wierd and confusing but ok to me, it opens up the conversation over where the grapes are grown and what does it mean (if anything)....

  • Sloppy Louies ? is it still around. It was five dollar fish sandwiches for the Water Street lunch crowd. Other wise, try Mexico, the delicate freshwater specialties of Jalisco are my all time faves & of course the grapeless green wine's beyond compare.

Asimov gave it what I thought was a really nice 2 star review in the Times today. He liked the room more than me, but I agree with everything else.
