Day 1 of 5 of the detox juice fast. What have I gotten myself into? Breakfast was, uh... interesting. And green. I'll keep you posted here because I have no one else to whom I can complain.
Actually it sort of started yesterday because I had to get ready. Only ate brown rice and vegetables yesterday. I had a coffee in the morning, but no alcohol. I will continue the no alcohol thing all week, but will maybe drink a little bit of coffee if I get bad headaches.
This afternoon I go for my first ever colonic, and of course that is completely freaking me out (I'm from New England, what can I do? We're weird about stuff like that.)
Hopefully I'll have as positive an experience as Skinny, but at this point, to be honest, I'm just hoping I make it to the weekend.
You know, I just gotta have faith in the daily dose of steel-cut oatmeal.
good luck, jim. i hope this fad isn't catcy, i'd be happy to live out my life without ever getting a colonic, thank you very much. i'm also from new england, if that has anything to do with it. enough to have a room full of strangers witness the unpleasantness of childbirth.
Years ago when photos came from little shops that had glossy paper and enormous printers, I was picking up some snap shots. I took a quick look inside the envelope before I left and thought, "Who are these people."
Before I got too far into the stack, I heard another customer in a panic, "These aren't my photos! Where are my photos! I took pictures of my daughter giving birth to my grandchild and you LOST THEM!"
"Uh, are these yours?"
Not everything has to be the subject of a photo essay.
But then again, no telling what I'll find when I go to download images from D's camera -- e.g. a bowl full of upholstery padding that had been surgically extracted from the intestines of a dog. That's one way to get fiber in the diet.
Well, the colonic was not the worst thing I've ever done. The woman was quiet nice and managed to make it not too embarrassing. Plus I think that part of my brain just sort of shut down, like "okay, I'm going to do this so no sense being embarrassed." I can't really say I feel too different though. She thought I was pretty healthy and was surprised that I didn't "juice" every day. That just confirms my suspicion that some of the new age nutrition stuff is overblown. Not that it's bad to do, but more that you are born with a certain constitution and while what you do and eat is important, you aren't going to move too far from the place you started.
Anyway, I am fairly hungry on this diet which is unusual for me. I really don't eat much normally. I think it's just that I can't have more, so of course that makes me want more. I saw an Applebee's commercial last night and the food actually looked good! Yikes. And I keep counting the days until I can have a cheeseburger from Royale.
Drank about 2 oz. of black coffee this morning just to ward off the headache I had yesterday. That seemed like enough but maybe I'll have a few more sips later.
Day three, and I have to admit that this morning my big glass of juiced dark greens is almost tasting good. Amazing what a little hunger can do.
supposedly on or after the 3rd day you get all sorts of energy and lose the hunger, feel sort of high. any of that yet? are you just trying to clean the body out or is there another reason for the fast? when do you get to eat?
No, I've still got the hunger. But it's not that bad. Every two hours I get a juice (6 each day) and that knocks it back almost until the next one. But I certainly never feel full! And last night at dinner time was pretty hard.
I'm not noticing tons of energy I have to say. I walked from the LES to Tribeca yesterday and that pretty much wore me out. Maybe I'll start feeling the good stuff soon though.
I guess technically I shouldn't start eating again until Saturday morning, but I may try to persuade my juice partner that Friday night is really the end.
I think the biggest thing so far is just how long the nights are without the production of eating (especially going out) and drinking. What do people do with all that time? I don't have the focus to work really, but TV is so bad! Especially early. I guess I should be reading a book or something.
what about drinking bottled water and lots of it.
Yes, I'm drinking lots of water. Doesn't really compare to a cheeseburger though.
Day four. It is nice to wake up in the morning without a hang over. And I think the most dramatic change might be in my skin which has really cleared up. So good things are happening.
I'm still hungry, but my desires have changed from cheeseburgers and pizza to avocados. I need some fat dammit!
linda "unpleasantness of childbirth" luckly i can delete that line as taskmaster of this site, i am not smiling.....jim glad your doing this even if once a year, but i have to strongly disagree with your statement, one can alter one's life with diet.....the problem I hear with some juice diets (exp fruit) is you still need electroltes(sp?) and minerals, maybe the veggies help this, when i do my master cleanse (water, lemon, cayanne, and maple syrup) later this month I will be doing shots of sea salt water also during the day......my 4th colonic is in 2 weeks cant wait:>)
if i recall correctly, skinny, you were a bit shell shocked after ryley's birth and it took you some days to recover.
I had a little salt in my diet. Also some nut milks.
Coming off today. I do feel really good I have to admit. I will take it easy for a little while. We're going to add things back in slowly instead of jumping right to the cheeseburger as I was fantasizing about (but now don't really want that much.) Probably I'll have a glass of wine tonight though.
All in all a really positive experience, if a little bit of an ordeal.
smoke-free as well?
Yes.
be flexitarian brother jim, but flex slowly at first:>)........
