A rumor is circulating on fb that Gem Spa has closed for good. Not seeing anything about it on the web but I guess they've been struggling for awhile.

Never heard of them, and it does not look delicious to me but since its a hit since the roaring 20's, I am out numbered.....sorry NYers for your loss

They made a decent egg cream and their magazine selection was quite good, though they phased that out a few years ago. More a landmark than anything else.

24 hour news stand. Where you went to get first edition NYT theater and art reviews.

The combination of troubles started late last spring, when Gem Spa lost their license to sell cigarettes and tobacco products — a large source of revenue. (A now-former employee reportedly sold cigarettes to an undercover minor.) In addition, their lottery license was suspended last spring for an outstanding debt.

Gem Spa also stopped selling newspapers and magazines, a dwindling revenue source and a marked shift in consumer behavior
