In 2004 I will get even more anal and only give scores to meals over 90 out of 100 points, otherwise just babble on....
I hope to get to my top 3 from 2003 this January, plus Casa Mono (fav from December), than its off to new spots plus a few I want to re-try.
The list is long but its Sugiyama, Trotter/Kunz/Keller, Sumile, Megu, Ariyoshi, Biltmore Room, Spice Market, Asiate (take #2), Ping's, Kurima Zushi, Geisha,
Boi, Soba Nippon, etc
Times today talks about the Japanese revolution, yahoo!!
Wylie showed me Japanese "food porno mags" back in 2001 that woke me up,
I sadly missed great meals in Japan cause me broke and booze was more important in the 80's.
Kai did and I assume will continue rocking my world and charts, I am so excited about this year of eating, so much is happening in NY.
Not exciting is the Aquavit chef new spot, to me Aquavit is overrated and look at the Times, "...foie gras nori and short ribs and applesauce, and sushi..." this is cutting edge?? NOT!! And another no thanks looks like Matsuri, the La Caravelle chef leaves cause as the Times sez "...do I really have to work so hard?"
Well Mr Lazy, I am too tired to make it to your new spot!!
But so much to try!!
new favorite snack

in case you missed it, grimes looks back.
If I am not buying fish at the Greenmarket in Union Sq, its EcoFish for me, love them (100% recycled packaging, 25% of profits donated for marine conservation, and the taste!!), its frozen in my local Health Food Store but they offer even more fresh for restaurants....DIG THEM!!
Yesterday lunch was Bao Noodles, the chef gave me a taste of one of his moms recipe's, coconut curry soup with pinky finger shaped shrimp dumplings, its the best dish I have tasted there, this place rocks, that dish was SO REAL, reminded me of eating in Thailand, he said the dish is from south Vietnam near the Cambodian border.....dont miss this spot!!

last night was a try-fector....Casa Mono was amazing, than off to a blast from the past Nicola Peona for some old wine (tired like the food) from the 50's and 60's, than wd~50 for a new dish I had yet to try, AWESOME!!! (and had to have the scallops again:>)
I think Casa Mono is a home run, my kinda eating, fantastic....
We had an amazing tasting at WD50 last week. I think this is a new thing for them (at least having it listed on the menu.) Just another reason to go check out (or return to) this amazing place.
And then last night we had a tasting at Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar, the somewhat new place by the team from Jewel Bako. It's right across the street on 5th between 2nd and 3rd. Amazing interior. Two floors in what was a tiny residential building. You feel like you are inside someone's perfectly decorated house. Very classy. Some in our group thought it was too fussy, but I loved it. There is really no other place I've been to with this feel.
The food was very good, if not breathtaking. But the tasting took a long time. 4 and a half hours! Really too long in my opinion. And it's not that I can't imagine a meal of that duration, it's just that this wasn't it.
Nice wine list, with some really high end French stuff we carefully avoided.
All in all I really recommend one trip, at least, for the interior experience. Get dressed up. Pretend you are living in a different, more dignified, age. Very fun, if long, night.
