"Under the state's smoking ban, which went into effect last July, most counties in New York were given the authority to draft their own guidelines for issuing waivers. Typically, establishments must show a financial loss above a threshold established by the county, usually 10 or 15 percent.
....A statewide analysis of the smoking ban by the American Cancer Society shows that of the state's 65,000 bars and restaurants, only 132 have been granted waivers." NYT, June 17
When staying a D's house I often lament the shortage of good restaurants in not just Boulder Creek, but the entire San Lorenzo valley. The Pozole Jalisco produced by the non-work-permitted guest workers at a local gormet-to-go shop is a welcome addition to the eco-system and is a even better use of hominy than is grits.
WNYC 93.9 - up next : "the three young chefs are: Cornelius Gallagher, executive chef of Oceana; Brian Bistrong, executive chef of Josephs on 6th Ave. and 49th St.; and Wylie Dufresne, a James Beard nominee for Rising Star Chef of the Year in 2000 and current owner and chef of WD50 on the Lower East Side. 71 Clinton is at this moment playing live grateful dead from the very early 70's.
And I have nothing to do with it.

Every year at about this time I find my self at a loss trying to remember all the great outdoor-seating restaurants I had "re/discovered" the year before.
Care to partake in some list making - restaurants with outdoor seating/gardens?

Is it a good thing or a bad thing if David Lee Roth eats at your restaurant?
i ordered from fresh direct last night. my order is supposed to arrive between 4 and 6. im a little skeptical of the operation as my $67 bill reads as $80 on my credit cards account online. but its pending. hmm. also, they charge a $4 delivery fee which is a reasonable amount but it annoys me on some level. isnt their core purpose "to deliver?" isnt that like being charged twice for the crime of laziness?
Bribing your way into restaurants (via kottke) Seems more sensible to just eat at 10:00 instead of 8:00, but I guess there are people who do this.
We’re still waiting for the DMTree review of Megu. In the meantime, the Post whines about the menu, never mind the food.

Gushing 71 Clinton review. Well, it would be gushing except it's true. Seriously. This kid is off the charts.
Farci of vidalia onion, riesling risotto, savoy cabbage, golden raisins, marscapone is my new favorite dish in the world.
I don't know the reviewer, Andrea Strong, but her blog looks nice.
We had a fun meal at Woo Chon yesterday: myriad veggie appetizer/condiments and beef seared en table. Baby had milk. One topic of our conversation is treated in today's Page Six:
NOT BITING
YOU can't throw a rock without hitting someone who doesn't want to be the next New York Times restaurant critic. First, former New Yorker literary editor Bill Buford turned his nose up at the offer. Next, we're told they asked novelist Jay McInerney , but he didn't bite, having just signed on for another year as wine columnist for House & Garden. Sources say British author Julian Barnes also found the grind unappetizing while San Francisco Chronicle foodie Michael Bower almost lost his lunch at the prospect. (Bower says he never met with anyone from the Times.) Meanwhile, the paper is still on its second "interim" critic, Amanda Hesser . Will it need a third?
