I started copying this site to the new server. You don't necessarily have to be aware. But if you were going to upload anything (images I guess) and it didn't matter to you whether you did it now or waited, then you should wait. If you do upload something after I crawl through your directory (but before we switch to the new server) we'll just have to figure it out and copy it over in a second step. So maybe comment here if you do upload stuff this weekend (I don't mean posts, just images.) Not sure yet but maybe I will try to make the switch live for Monday morning.
Great! I will post pics to tommoody.us until further notice.
Dave, do you need the music you have on the old server (in /music )copied over? It's probably all on the new server already, no?
Everything is copied over. I have a snapshot of the database from earlier today, plus all the code, running on the new server at http://test.datamantic.com/
You'll have to sign in again.
My quick look around seemed to indicate that everything is okay, but I'm sure there will be problems somewhere. Take a look at your pages if you can and let me know. (Be aware that some links will take you back to the old site if you're not careful - obviously that won't be a problem once digitalmediatree.com is on the new server.)
How do people feel? Should we take a lot of time to make sure it's right, or just flip the switch and deal with problems as they arise? I don't really care so much, but I'm anxious to get underway.
My page looks fine--Steve's and my comments to the next to last (Sun Tunnels) post will need to be added, but otherwise everything on page checks out on quick inspection.
If it's really just a matter of flipping the switch to make the transfer, I say go for it. I'll be here to hunt bugs. Will you be available to work on this while you're out of town?
Is the image library moving, too? What about the music library--is that all being integrated with the datamantic music library?
The music and image libraries have been copied to the new server (ash.) Image files and music files seen at test.datamantic.com are coming off the new server unless the URLs specifically start with http://www.digitalmediatree.... They will all be served off ash once I update the DNS. So it literally is just flipping a switch at this point.
I'll put up a notice on the old server that the site is down temporarily while moving servers. Then I'll resync the database again so nothing is lost (like those comments,) and point the DNS at ash. Hopefully it should only take 5 minutes for DNS to be updated, but this is somewhat dependent on the black arts of DNS resolution, so I wouldn't bet my life on it or anything. Should happen quickly though. Maybe I'll do that as late tonight as I can.
I will be online while out of town, yes.
Do we need to do any drill for Peer 1? It's been a while since our walkthrough.
Yeah, we do probably. Although I always figure I could walk you through it by cell phone. Still, we should probably do a dry run. Maybe when I get back.
Still haven't done it yet. I forgot about email. People who have dmtree email need to make sure they have all their mail downloaded. There may be a brief interruption in service when we switch. My plan now is to do that tonight. I'll try to contact everyone who has a lot of mail in their accounts.
