Maybe it's just a cache problem. When you sign in and are taken back to the home page (where it then seems like you are not signed in?) maybe your computer is showing you a local cached version of the front page (from the time before, when you weren't signed in.) Instead of going to another page and hitting [home] to get back to the front page (where you now magically appear to be signed in) just reload the front page in your browser. This will force it to get a fresh version of the front page.
If that works (and makes any sense) you can permanently fix this problem by disabling your browsers cache (so it loads every new page from the server, and not from a local copy) in preferences under advanced (in Netscape.)
