I telephoned the Washington offices of my senators and congressman this morning about Iraq. The polite but bored phone-answerers got the following earful: "Hi, I'm a constituent, and I'm just calling to say that I'd like [the elected rep] to vote against any resolution giving the President broad, open-ended powers to start a war against Iraq. Declaring war is Congress's job under the Constitution, not the President's. Fighting Iraq is a personal obsession of George Bush's, and Senators and Congressmen, particularly Democrats, should stop looking over their shoulders to see how everyone else is voting, listen to their constituents (most of whom oppose the war), and stand up to the President. It's time to focus on more important matters, like the economy. I'm calling on my own behalf and not as part of some orchestrated campaign: I think Congress is out of touch and needs to listen to voters." Universal response from operators: "Thank you, Mr. Moody, I'll pass your message along to [the elected representative]."
I was pleased to see that my Congressman (Menendez) and one of my Senators (Corzine) were among the brave, totally cool people who voted "No" to Bush's blank war check. The other Senator, Torricelli, is a corrupt person who's leaving the Senate in disgrace, so who cares about him.
Let it be noted that Hillary Clinton, eyeballing the presidency in '08, showed her true gutless colors and voted with Bush. Here's her dishonest, "depends on what the meaning of is is" rationale, according to the NY Times: "she concluded that bipartisan support would make the president's success at the United Nations 'more likely and, therefore, war less likely.''" Yeah, we'll remember you said that when the bombs start falling next month, Hil.
And former Republican Jim Jeffords voted no--rock on, Jim!
Here's the roll call of infamy. Let us never forget the warmongers (and weasels) who voted "Yes" to this insanity.

"Mr. Speaker, I rise in opposition to this resolution (authorizing military force against Iraq). I am deeply troubled that lives may be lost without a meaningful attempt to bring Iraq into compliance with U.N. resolutions through careful and cautious diplomacy.
"The bottom line is I don't trust this president and his advisors."
If the dems don't punish Hillary for this vote, then I don't know what to think of the party. As a point of reference, Feinstein was quietly re-elected in '06.
I have some concerns about Obama, but at least he was right on this one huge, trillion dollar, war-without-end issue.
Edwards and Biden admitted this was a blunder. She's sticking to her double-talk, which almost makes me think she really supported it. It's not like Bill didn't spend most of his Administration dropping bombs on the Iraqis--I mean, "enforcing the no-fly zones."
