Between Christmas and New Year's Jim Bassett went to LA and environs and kept everyone visually informed on his photolog. All the pictures were taken with one of those cell phone/camera/internet browser combos, and even better, Jim worked out a way to resize and upload them directly to the website from the camera. The picture above is super lush and proves (along with many others) that this method is completely "there" as a photographic medium. Nice work, Jim! The California trip pictures start roughly halfway down this page. Click "older posts" at the bottom of that page to view more. |
Thanks Tom. For anyone interested, the phone is a Handspring Treo 600 on the Sprint network. The camera is "merely" VGA, meaning the photos come out at 640 x 480. I have the server scale them to 320 x 240 because they look better that way (I suspect that is the native resolution and they get them to 640 x 480 in software.) One interesting thing about the phone is that you can't really see the pictures well on the screen, so I have no idea when I upload photos whether they are good or not. This actually works out for me, because it means I just don't worry about it. But we should start to see 1 megapixel camera phones by late spring, and already there are much higher resolution screens, so this whole thing should start to get much more interesting soon. Words already seem so cumbersome to me.
I was tossing up which to get a new tiny Sony 6 mega they have out here, in Japan, or just the regular phone camera. Seeing these picks I am now the proud owner of a Sony Ericsson 1.3 mega-pixel keitai though as with Jim's can only email the 640 x 480 or below. I'll probably buy the 6 megapix anyway but I agree phone cameras are a cult unto themselves.
What I like about the images is a faded-like quality which reminds me of old postcards, the guts appears to be taken out, producing this odd feeling --odd just like a Polaroid except oddness in reverse.
